Text 01Bevezető

I

The week had been full and busy for the doctor. As he drove into his driveway that Saturday afternoon, he looked forward to putting on his old comfortable clothes, relaxing in front of the TV, and watching his favourite football team playing an important match. Halfway through the game, the phone rang. There was an emergency at the hospital and he was needed immediately. He grabbed his bag and dashed out the door to his car in the driveway. He climbed in, started the engine, and was ready to go. Suddenly he felt as if somebody was standing by his open window. It was so real he felt he could reach out and touch it. He even paused long enough to turn his head and look. He didn't see anything but it was as if he heard a word of warning. “Don't back out of the driveway. Get out and look behind the car.” Even though the doctor was in a hurry, he felt he must obey the message. He got out of his car, walked around to the back, and there he saw the little three-year-old boy from next door playing happily with his toy cars.

Karen grew up in a small town in Northern Ireland. She was eight years old and it was her responsibility to walk home from school with her little six-year-old sister. Each day they walked down the street, shaded by old trees. Karen looked forward to passing her favourite house. It was a large red brick home set in a garden carpeted with beautiful flowers and surrounded by a tall iron fence. She liked it because she always imagined that it was the big old house where the main characters, Beth and Jo, lived from her favourite story.

One afternoon as they were walking past the big house, she and her sister suddenly felt a hand on their shoulders. In an instant, they were picked up and placed gently down about fifteen feet away. In that same moment, a car came down the street at high speed and ran up on the pavement, smashing into the iron fence at the exact spot where Karen and her little sister had been walking. If they had been there, they would have been run over by the car and crushed into the fence. Karen turned around to see who had picked them up, but no one was there.

Az orvos teljes hete zsúfolt és dolgos volt. Amikor szombat délutánján felhajtott a kocsifelhajtójára, várakozással tekintett arra, hogy régi, kényelmes ruhájában pihen a TV előtt, és a kedvenc labdarúgó csapatát nézi, amely fontos mérkőzésen játszik. Félúton járt amikor csörgött a telefon. Vészhelyzet volt a kórházban, és rögtön szükség volt rá. Megragadta a táskáját, és kitépte a kocsajtót a kocsifelhajtón. Beszált, beindította a motort, és készen állt az indulásra. Hirtelen úgy érezte, mintha valaki állna a nyitott ablak mellett. Annyira valóságos volt, hogy úgy érezte, elérheti és megérintheti. Még megállt, hogy megfordítsa a fejét és megnézze. Nem látott semmit, csak mintha hallotta volna a figyelmeztetést: “Ne tolass vissza a kocsifelhajtóból. Szállj ki, és nézz az autó mögé." Bár az orvos sietett, úgy érezte, hogy engedelmeskednie kell az üzenetnek. Kiszállt az autójából, hátrafelé sétált, és ott látta a szomszéd 3 éves kisfiát, boldogan játszani a kapuban a kisautóival.

Karen Észak-Írországi kisvárosban nőtt fel. Nyolc éves volt, és az ő feladata volt, hogy haza sétáljon az iskolából a kis hatéves nővérével. Minden nap sétáltak az utcán, az öreg fák árnyékában. Karen előrenézett a kedvenc házuk mellett elhaladva. Egy nagy vörös téglaház volt, melyet gyönyörű virágokkal borított kertben állítottak fel, és körülvette egy magas vas kerítés. Szerette, mert mindig elképzelte, hogy ez volt a nagy öreg ház, ahol Beth és Jo éltek, a kedvenc történetének a főszereplői.

Egyik délután, amikor a nagy ház mellett sétáltak, Ő és a nővére hirtelen kezet éreztek a vállukon. Egy pillanat alatt felvette őket, és gyengéden elhúzta őket körülbelül tizenöt méterre. Ugyanabban a pillanatban egy autó nagy sebességgel jött le az utcán, és a járdára futott neki a vas kerítésnek, ott ahol Karen és a nővére jártak. Ha ott maradnak, a kocsit keresztül ment volna rajtuk, és a kerítésen szétzúzza őket. Karen megfordult, hogy lássa, ki vette fel őket, de senki sem volt ott.
