Queen Elizabeth II, was born on 21 April, 1926, a few days before a general strike began in the United Kingdom. It was also the year when television was invented by a Scotsman.
In 1947 when the British rule in India came to an end, she and her husband Philip, now known as Prince Philip, got married in Westminster Abbey. The event was fairly simple as Britain was still recovering from the Second World War, which had ended only two years earlier, and Princess Elizabeth had to collect clothing coupons for her dress, just like any other young bride.

Her first child, Charles, now The Prince of Wales, was born in 1948, in a year remarkable for the second Olympic Games hosted by London.

In February 1952, in a year when the world's first commercial jet service was started from London, Princess Elizabeth received the news of her father's death and her own accession to the throne, while touring in Africa. The young Princess flew back to Britain as Queen. Her coronation, however, took place only in the following year, in 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to climb Mount Everest. The news reached Britain on the day of Elizabeth's Coronation, and the press called the successful ascent of the highest mountain peak in the world a coronation gift for her.

Television brought home to hundreds of thousands of people around the world the Coronation in a way never before possible.

Queen Elizabeth's first grandson, William, was born in 1982, the year when a war between the United Kingdom and Argentina broke out over the Falkland Islands.

Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, to celebrate fifty years of her reign, took place in 2002 when the common European currency, the euro, was introduced, while Great Britain continued to use the pound. It was also a sad year for the royal family as both the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret died in that year.

She had her Diamond Jubilee, ten years later, to mark sixty years of her reign in 2012, when the Olympic Games were held in London again, for the third time now.
